Dangerous goods — from chemicals and acids to lithium batteries, gas cylinders, and pyrotechnics — can indeed be transported by air freight, provided they are correctly classified, packaged, and documented according to IATA DGR regulations.

Exporting to Chile

Chile is one of the most open economies in the world and has an Association Agreement with the EU that offers preferential or zero-tariff imports. Key markets include machinery, mining equipment, pharmaceuticals, automotive parts, and agri-technology. Schiphol operates direct cargo flights to Santiago (SCL) via KLM Cargo and LATAM Cargo. Cargo-to-cargo transit typically takes 14–18 hours.

Customs & Regulations

The Chilean Customs (Servicio Nacional de Aduanas) operates efficiently and relatively smoothly. Most shipments require a commercial invoice, packing list, and— for preferential clearance under the EU-Chile agreement— an EUR.1 or declarant statement. SAG (Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero) inspections apply for food and agricultural products. Medical equipment requires ISP registration.

Importing from Brazil

Brazil is a top producer of agricultural commodities: soy, sugar, coffee, citrus, and meat. In addition, Brazil exports aircraft parts (Embraer), machinery, and petrochemical products. Air freight from Brazil mainly involves high-value or time-sensitive goods: fresh fruit juices, pharmaceutical raw materials, aircraft parts, and precious stones.

Import duties & documentation

Standard EU import duties apply when importing from Brazil into the EU. The EU-Mercosur trade agreement (under negotiation) is expected to reduce tariffs on many Brazilian products. Certificates of origin are mandatory when claiming preferential tariffs.

Chile as a Crosstrade Destination

Schiphol is a logical European hub for crosstrades towards Chile— especially for Asian shipments flown via AMS to SCL. LATAM Cargo, KLM Cargo, and Cargolux serve these routes. Important points for DGR shipments

IATA DGR classification mandatory

Dangerous goods must be classified according to the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR). The classification determines the UN class, packing group, permitted quantities per package, and the mode of transport (passenger aircraft or cargo aircraft only).

Documentation

Every DGR shipment requires a fully completed Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods, signed by a trained DGR specialist. Aircargo.nl employs certified DGR experts who prepare and verify all documentation.

Packaging

DGR goods must be packed in UN-certified packaging suitable for the UN class and packing group. Incorrect packaging is the most common reason for refusal by the airline.
